on the campus of the massachusetts institute of technology, a prestigious university here in the boston area, specifically in cambridge, there was a shooting of a police officer. the officer was killed. there was also a carjacking in cambridge. there was a chase. two individuals have been arrested in watertown, massachusetts. there has been a big police presence, both local law enforcement and the federal bureau of investigation, the fbi which would suggest that this is not your average local crime, even though the shooting of a police officer is taken sle seriously. the fbi would not necessarily be involved in the manhunt for somebody who shot a police officer. the fbi has said, they've acknowledged to cnn, they're trying to figure out if there's any connection whatsoever with what is going on this evening on the campus of m.i.t. and in watertown where the individuals were apprehended and what happened earlier on monday a couple blocks from me. i'm going to go to drew griffin on the scene in watertown where these arrests have taken place. drew, what can you tell us? >> reporter: we just got

activity, on the campus of the massachusetts institute of technology, m.i.t., in cambridge, where one police officer was shot and killed. it wasn't until roughly 2:00 in the morning east coast that -- i'm told now -- i see them. the police station, the mobile station, mobile command center, has moved from here on the crime scene and is now going to whereabouts unknown. we don't know where. but the fact it would be doing so at 2:30 in the morning is an interesting development in what's going on. in any case, to recap at 10:30 this evening there was a shooting on the campus of mrchlgts i.t. in cambridge, a police officer was killed. also a carjacking. one suspect was apprehended in watertown. that person has been apprehended and arrested. we don't know if what's going on in cambridge and watertown is related at all to what took place on monday, but obviously there is a heightened police presence, a heightened law enforcement presence, both boston police and the fbi. i'm going to check in right now with juliette kayyem, if she's fill on the phone. are you still there? >> i am. hi, jake.

institute of technology. drew griffin joins us on the phone from boston with more information. what are you able to tell us? what's happening now? >> reporter: earlier this evening in m.i.t., the university which is literally across the charles river, a police officer was shot, taken to the hospital and later died. this has become a much, much bigger story. the scope of which we're not quite clear of. there has been a huge sign of police force at the police officer shooting at the m.i.t. campus and now a huge incident at watertown just past harvard university on the way outside of boston, a suburb, but there are reports of ordinances on the street, a suspect who has been taken into custody, another one on the loose. and i can just tell you i'm walking up on the scene where there are dozens and dozens of police officers and ambulances circling this little town square area where there seems to be some sort of large event that has taken place involving suspects that may have been connected to the m.i.t. shooting. but we don't know if they're connected to anything else that has happened in bost
played a big role in the boston bombing story this week. kron four's jeff bush explains how technology helped and hurt the flow of information. >> reporter: the entire country was focused on the events in boston all week long. it was a drama that played out on every possible platform imaginable. on monday, youtube videos were uploaded shortly after the bombing. this was a big asset to detectives who were just beginning their investigation. twitter was essential with getting the word out about the bombing but also helped people reconnect with loved ones after the explosions. internet sleuths were hard at work enhancing video and still images and uploading themagain, playing a key roll in helping police figure out who the bombers were. then, on thursday, when the fbi released the photos of the bombing suspects those images were shared across all platforms of social media. at the same time, police were looking into the youtube and twitter accounts of the bombing suspects to get some insight about possible motivations. the drama intensified on the computer screen early friday morning when
